Phil Steward provides assessment-led Bowen therapy at Hands On Clinic in Braunton. He began practising professionally at 21 and has spent more than three decades working with people experiencing musculoskeletal pain, movement restrictions and recurring discomfort.

Clients consult Phil from across North Devon and further afield, including people seeking another approach when previous treatment has provided only temporary relief.

An assessment-led approach

Phil follows a clear process: Assess → Treat → Reassess.

He begins by discussing your symptoms, relevant history and how discomfort affects everyday life. Hands-on assessment and movement checks then guide treatment, which may involve exploring areas beyond the site of pain.

Phil will discuss referral or other care where appropriate. Treatment is tailored to the individual, and results vary.

Training and experience

Phil’s background includes study at the Oxford School of Massage, the Northern Institute of Sports Massage and the Midland School, alongside Ayurvedic massage training in India.

His original Bowen qualification was A.O.R.B.T.A., and his further training includes the Dorn Method and advanced manipulative therapy.

He has also studied with Bowen teachers Graham Pennington, Ron Phelan, Alastair McLoughlin and John Wilks. His training included an intensive programme in Croatia with Graham Pennington and one of Tom Bowen’s original apprentices, Dr Rommney Smeeton.

Teaching Assessment-Led Bodywork

Alongside clinical practice, Phil teaches through Assessment-Led Bodywork Training (ALBT).

His teaching focuses on helping therapists use assessment to guide treatment and reassessment to evaluate change—the same principles that underpin his work at Hands On Clinic.

The Croatia Group
“I started young, at an early age I had a gift of getting rid of mum’s headaches. Then as now I rely on intuition as my guide and teacher. This has lead me to many great people whom have passed on information to me. To books that have answered questions when required. To every client I see, friend I have, they all teach me, everyday! The most trusted gift I’m empowered with is an innate feeling of what is right and what needs to be done and how it needs to be done. The more I have learnt to trust this gift, the more I have learnt from it. I believe in this work and service. I trust it will work for you “

“Back when I had a job I reviewed massage for a living (yeah yeah, jammy or what?) and I can tell the second someone puts their hands on me if they’re going to be good or not. Phil was good. More than good. Up there in my top five bodyworkers”
